Moron = me

Well, this was a great way to start the year off with our big project for Sketching.

Not handing in all the drawings you had. Yup. Genius that I am, I grabbed half the sketches and forgot that all the gestures and structural design was still in my actual sketchbook so I handed it in without them. I just noticed today while sitting in class looking through my notes all hiding inside.

What really pisses me off is that I did them. Obviously considering I handed in the cleaned up versions and yes I know people can do that first and cheat their way to the gestures, but I'm really compulsive and made sure I did it step by step.

FAIL! Haha.

Reading Week

Tomorrow is the beginning of our reading week. Hopefully I can force myself into doing homework and actually moving forward instead of procrastinating like a fool and waiting until 2 days before to move my ass. It's 2:45 in the morning right now so I'm a bit too lazy to go scan in some of my stuff from recent classes, but I keep telling myself that tomorrow is my starting day for school work.

However, I do have the initial sketch I used for the tracing in Illustrator assignment. I was really disappointed with the printout. Even with glossy paper and me brightening my colours up insanely, my highlights and even outlines became hidden by some of the colours. It looks so much more flat. BOOOurns to the printers! As soon as I reinstall illustrator I will post the finished product.



My "Protector." He was made last year for Bluestein's class. We had to follow a really bad comic idea (it was..don't kid yourself..Protector was so flamboyant and..UGH) and create the designs and a comic page of this guy. I decided to use Micheal Turner's style. He's not insane like Jim Lee, but he's very distinct enough that if properly copied you can tell it's his stuff. I went for the futuristic look rather than the trenchcoat styled guy most people in my class did. I have the hots for Nightwing and those type of comic book guys so I went towards that spandex awesomeness, haha.

I actually completely forgot to scan the final sketch with the shading and didn't notice until I looked at my blog tonight. Soooo here is the sketch before and after the shading. First thing I notice is that I confuse things once I shade. I lose much of my outline or contour. The perspective on the feet is a little wonky, but it was a quick sketch and I could always alter it if so be it.

In-Class Sketches

For this post we were told to upload our sketches from the last few classes and briefly talk about each one. The first sketch is of the construction going on across the parking lot. Although obviously not finished, I have to admit I'm much more happy with this sketch then I was at first while drawing it. Perspective is one of my biggest issues with drawing and it comes out easily when drawing houses or anything for that matter. It's not horrible for a free-hand though.


The next set of sketches is from our last class. We had to bring in a toy and draw it in different positions. One thing I can state by experiencing and looking at these drawings is that I am very rusty. I know perspective and anatomy are hard to draw, but after not drawing for quite some time I can see how much slower I've become in comparison to my life drawings of last year.

The first sketch below is actually one of my favourite of the sketches. Although not as loose as a gesture or quick sketch should be, I felt as though the movement of the figure and weight on the leg is being shown. I used quick line references to angle the hips, knees and spine.




This next one is slightly more of a gesture, but as you can see there are som perspective issues going on with the figure. In my opinion the torso is too large for the rest of the body.

I actually liked this sketch. I used the blue pencil to do the quick gesture and with the time we were given I began adding detail with a regular pencil. I felt this one portayed the angle and weight of the figure pretty well.


I had some problems with this sketch mainly because of the Chief's left leg. I couldn't get the proper positioning of the leg, so this clearly states that I am still having some observational issues. I tried using the techniques I've been taught to properly align and measure out the different sections of the body, but I am still learning.


The last drawing is our Orthographic sketch. I completely had trouble telling myself to not draw in detail for this. I was aware of what our teacher wanted, but the more I drew, the more I noticed I unknowingly kept adding detail. It's very wrong, but this will teach me for the future if I ever use the Orthographic method again.
